Upgrading 2″ Galvanised Steel to Copper
Working in Sheltered Accomodation
We often undertake specialist internal plumbing projects for our clients, and this is a great example of that kind of project.
Yarlington Housing Association manage a number of blocks of sheltered accommodation in Somerset, and their projects team had identified a need to upgrade the internal water pipes from the original galvanised iron pipes that were coming to the end of their useful life.
Pipefix undertook the initial survey to specify the new pipe size requirements and how to introduce them into the flats without requiring the occupants to vacate the premises during the works. We concluded that it would be possible to do this and proposed using insulated copper pipe installed along the corridors at roof height. The incoming riser would be 73mm copper, reducing to 44mm and then down to 22mm for the final connection into the flats.
Using this method meant we could switch the occupant over onto the new supply with only about an hour of interruption to their water supply.
Pipefix managed the complete project as Designer and Principal Contractor under CDM. We kept the residents and stakeholders up to date at all stages of the project and notified the residents in writing when the works were going to affect them.
